The workload of a busy mum can feel overwhelming. Having a child introduces heaps of new tasks we need to take care of, while we still have to take care of most of the tasks from before we had a baby.
Mums often feel overwhelmed with the amount of tasks they have to do. Fortunately, there is one simple trick to alleviate the stress of this overwhelming workload and to effectively manage our tasks.
The simple trick that will help us manage our workload is the 80:20 rule. In case you haven’t come across it, the goal of the 80:20 rule is to identify the tasks that are the most productive and make them a priority. 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.
In other words, there are a Vital Few tasks (20%) that produce the majority of the benefits (80%). Conversely, there are the Trivial Many tasks (80%) that produce only the Trivial Few results (20%).
There are three simple steps to using the 80:20 rule to manage our sense of overwhelm.
First, we need to accept that no mum is perfect. Be kind you yourself and ditch the guilt! Not every little task is going to get done, and that’s ok. Even if there are some tasks that don’t get done, the world is going to keep spinning. It is far more important that you manage your stress levels and spend some quality time with your baby.
Second, we need to assess at the tasks that make us so busy. Take a look at your To Do list. How much time does each task take? And how big of a result does each task provide? I bet you’ll quickly see a big disparity between the efficiency of the Vital Few tasks and the Trivial Many tasks.
Third, we need to separate the wheat from the chaff. We need to create a To NOT Do list, and we need to make that a home for our Trivial Many tasks. We need to reserve our To Do list for the Vital Few. We need to push any of our Trivial Many tasks onto the To NOT Do list.
We’re not saying that the things in our To NOT Do List aren’t important. We’re just saying that doing them right now is not more important. We’re not saying the things in our To NOT Do List aren’t going to be done. We’re just saying that we’re not going to do them now.
Which tasks we decide to put in which list is subjective, so it is going to be different for everyone. Here's an example:
