10 Top Tips for Staying Healthy in Lockdown. A guide for Mums

Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined what we'd be in for when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. In such chaotic and unpredictable times, sadly, our physical and mental health is often neglected first. But as we sit and wait for our lives to return to normal, why not control what we can do? Our health, our relationships and our mindset are all under our control. Below are our top tips for staying healthy and maintaining a little normality during this crazy, crazy time.


Get Dressed

We know staying in your pj's and dressing gown all day is tempting, but trust on this one. Even if you opt for exercise clothes, or a comfy hoodie, the act of getting dressed for the day does wonders for the mind.


Stick To a Routine

Having a little predictability to your day will provide comfort and offset uncertainty. For example, try scheduling a walk around the block at the same time each day or squeezing in ten minutes of playtime with the kids before home-schooling starts.


Prioritise Exercise

Finding the motivation to exercise during lockdown is hard; there's no sugar-coating it. But who has ever committed to a workout and regretted it? Ninety-nine per cent of the time, everyone feels better after completing a workout. So put your runners on and get it done, even if it's just 20 minutes.


Eat Healthy Foods

Junk foods wreak havoc on our state of mind. The mood swings that come with over-consumption of sugary and high-calorie foods can be super detrimental when we're already in a compromised mindset. Hence, our tip, click and collect your groceries to avoid being exposed to supermarket treats.


Be Serious About Self-Care

Do something each day that's just for you. Whether it's fifteen minutes of yoga before the kids wake up, a guided meditation before bed, or a nice long bath on Friday night. Find something that fills your cup and commit to it.


More Play Time

If there's one thing about lockdown that we'll look back on fondly, it's the increased family time. Modern families are busy, and with the chaos of school pick-ups and drop-offs, sports, parties and appointments, often there's not a lot of time for play. So use this extra time at home to get involved in the games and show the kids how fun mum is.


Avoid Alcohol

We're not saying you need to avoid all alcohol; we're not crazy. But one of the most common concerns people have raised since the beginning of lockdown is their increased alcohol consumption. So try to stick to healthy drinking habits by keeping the weeknights free for hot cacao or herbal tea.


Stay Connected

Nothing compares to face-to-face social interaction but staying connected in other ways is essential. It feels like zoom parties might have run their course but try to keep in touch with friends and families through phone calls, texts, and social media. You never know how much a simple text could brighten up a loved one's day.


Keep Hydrated

Research has shown that there is a link between hydration and improved mood and happiness. Drinking at least two litres of water a day can also help to keep you feeling satiated and reduce the need for snacking.


Seek Support

Most importantly, never be afraid to seek support. Lockdown is scary and entirely new for us all. We all have our ways to cope, but sometimes we just need the help of others to get us through a tough day.
